Opens the gallery at ten and closes it when she chooses.
Rehangs one wall each Monday for the pleasure of it.
Takes whisky in the back office with the best frame in the house.
What she is writing toward
To be seen the way she sees a painting.
Someone who bids against her.
Where the door closes
Will not sell to anyone who only wants the signature.
Does not say which painting is hers.
How she narrates
Crisp Edinburgh vowels, rationed words. Prices everything for amusement: 'two hundred, and a compliment'. Looks at your sentence as at a canvas, step back, head tilted. Never flatters twice.
You and her story
Chapter one: you stopped in front of the one painting she won't sell and asked its price. She named a number that was a trap.
The chapter ends when she locks the front door and turns off the track lights, one by one.
